Core Web Vitals Is a Gate, Not a Rocket: The Honest Guide to Speed and Rankings
Here is what Google said about Core Web Vitals on March 12, 2024, the same day it updated its official page experience documentation:
“Trying to get a perfect score just for SEO reasons may not be the best use of your time.”
That is a direct quote from Google’s own documentation update, reported the same day by Search Engine Land. John Mueller, Google’s Search Advocate, said this on LinkedIn that same morning:
“Yes! Google Search does use Core Web Vitals for Search. However… it’s not worth over-focusing on tweaking the scores just for SEO… it’s not going to make your site’s rankings jump up.”
This is not an old caveat from a cautious engineer. This is Google’s current, on-the-record position, stated on the day they updated their documentation. And yet the most common SEO pitch in 2024 and 2025 remains: fix your Core Web Vitals to climb the rankings.
The pitch is wrong. And being right about this is more useful to your business than chasing a score.
The Gate Model
Core Web Vitals work as a gate, not as a dial.
Below the threshold: your site is actively penalized. Google’s ranking systems register a poor page experience signal, and it suppresses your visibility relative to sites that meet the standard.
At the threshold: the penalty is removed. Passing “Good” on all three metrics clears the flag. You are no longer at a disadvantage due to page experience.
Above the threshold: nothing measurable changes. Improving from a good LCP to an excellent LCP does not earn you additional ranking weight. Martin Splitt, a Google Developer Relations engineer, put this directly: “Core Web Vitals are not a direct and proportional ranking factor. Moving from 85 to 87 changes nothing in your positioning.”
This is a binary pass/fail mechanism with a very real cost for failure and no additional reward for over-performance. Every claim that “higher Core Web Vitals scores mean higher rankings” is describing a mechanism that does not exist.
What the Research Actually Shows
The most rigorous large-scale study available on this question is a 2026 analysis by Dan Taylor published in Search Engine Land, examining 107,352 pages and their appearance in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Using Spearman rank correlation — appropriate for non-normal distributions — the study found a correlation between LCP and AI Overview citation of r = −0.12 to −0.18.
That is a small, negative correlation. The negative direction confirms what the gate model predicts: severe failure suppresses citation. But the small magnitude means that excelling beyond the threshold produces no meaningful lift in AI search visibility. Failure hurts. Excellence, beyond “Good,” does not help.
This is correlational, not causal — a Spearman correlation cannot prove that fixing LCP caused AI citation to increase. But it is the largest publicly disclosed study of this specific relationship, and its conclusion aligns with Google’s own documented position.
For historical context, the 2021 Perficient study — a pre/post analysis of 1,188 keywords across six industries over 17 weeks, conducted by Eric Enge around the time of Google’s page experience rollout — found that “the data confirms CWV scores are not a large ranking factor… The rollout of the Page Experience update did not change the shape or scope of that correlation to any noticeable degree.” This is a HISTORICAL study, now five years old, but it remains the most rigorous controlled before/after analysis of CWV’s ranking weight, and every independent study since has reached the same conclusion.
LCP, INP, and CLS — In Plain Language
Because these acronyms appear in nearly every conversation about site speed, here is what each means in terms a business owner recognizes.
LCP — Largest Contentful Paint is when the main visible content of your page finishes appearing. If your homepage has a large banner image or headline, LCP is how long your visitor waits before they see it. Google’s threshold is under 2.5 seconds at the 75th percentile of real user sessions.
INP — Interaction to Next Paint replaced FID in March 2024. It measures how long your page takes to visually respond after a visitor clicks something — any click, any tap, across the entire visit. The threshold is under 200 milliseconds. This is the metric Google grades on real user data; it cannot be measured in Lighthouse, because it requires actual people clicking.
CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift measures whether page elements jump around as content loads. If a visitor is about to tap a button and an ad loads above it and shifts it downward, that is layout shift. The threshold is under 0.1.
To pass Core Web Vitals, you need all three at the 75th percentile of real Chrome user data — the Chrome UX Report (CrUX) field data collected on a 28-day rolling window. A Lighthouse score at the top of a PageSpeed Insights report is lab data, not field data. These are different measurements and they can diverge significantly.
A Worked Example
Consider a Tampa Bay dental practice whose website has an LCP of 6.2 seconds — well above the 2.5-second threshold. Their CrUX field data shows a failing score on LCP, meaning Google’s ranking systems are applying a page experience penalty. They are being suppressed relative to competitors whose sites pass.
They hire someone to fix it. LCP drops to 2.3 seconds. The penalty is removed. Their indexing parity is restored — they are now competing on the same terms as passing sites, with no artificial suppression.
Someone then says: let’s optimize to get LCP under 1 second. Push it to 1.1 seconds and really dominate.
The honest answer is: the ranking benefit of going from 2.3 seconds to 1.1 seconds is zero. The gate has already been cleared. No further ranking signal applies.
There may be real benefits to further improvement — user experience, conversion rate, mobile performance — and those are worth pursuing for their own sake. But the claim that it will move the ranking needle is not supported by Google’s documentation, Mueller’s statements, or any independent research.
The HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2024, which analyzed 16.9 million websites using CrUX field data from June 2024, found that only 43% of mobile sites pass all three Core Web Vitals with INP included. Only 59% pass LCP; only 74% pass INP on mobile. That means for most SMBs in Tampa Bay, their competitors have not cleared the gate at all. That is the actual opportunity — being one of the businesses that passes, when the majority have not.
The Objection Worth Preempting
“My SEO consultant says I need a 90+ score for Google to rank me.”
That sentence contains two separate errors.
First, there is no connection between a Lighthouse score and a CWV pass/fail. Google does not grade your Lighthouse score. It grades the 75th percentile of your CrUX field data. A site with a Lighthouse score of 91 can be failing Core Web Vitals in the field if real users are experiencing different conditions — slower devices, heavier JavaScript loads, third-party scripts that behave differently under live conditions.
Second, even if the site is passing CWV field data, there is no “higher score = higher ranking” relationship above the threshold. “Good” is not a floor that earns more as you go higher. It is a gate that is either open or closed.
The right question is not “what is my score” — it is “am I passing or failing in the field data.”
What You Should Actually Do About It
Fix failing Core Web Vitals to protect the rankings you have already earned. Do not fix them expecting a ranking multiplier that does not exist.
If your LCP is over 2.5 seconds, your INP is over 200 milliseconds, or your CLS is over 0.1 — measured in field data, not in Lighthouse — you have a real problem that is actively costing you ranking parity with passing competitors. That is worth fixing.
If you are passing all three thresholds, the question is not how to score higher. The question is whether your site is delivering a good enough experience to convert the traffic you are attracting — which is a conversion optimization question, not a ranking question.
